adler volmar
it’s about more than awards and recognition for this Olympian.
Adler was 13 and defenseless when attacked by seven classmates, leaving him with a deep knife gash that demanded stitches. It was a life-changing moment that led his mother to enrolling Adler in judo classes. There he learned not only to defend himself but to advocate for nonviolence. “In judo, you become wiser, and with wisdom comes power.” Adler also started teaching judo, including to the gang that attacked him. “They learned how to defend themselves in an honorable way.” Adler went on to the 1996 Olympics for Haiti and is now representing his native United States in an Olympic bid inspired by his mother, who died last year of cancer. The support of his wife, Crystal, their three children and the local community also are inspirations for the Olympic hopeful, as are Adler’s clients at the Coral Springs, Florida, 24 Hour Fitness where Adler is a personal trainer who shares his Olympic goals to convince clients they can do anything, so long as they work hard.
